So as I was reading the article by Julie Coiro my feelings about SRI testing that we do for our reading program (SFA) suddenly felt validated. We use data from computer testing to assess student growth in reading at the end of each eight week cycle, yet we never provide students with any other exposure to computer print. It is something that has always frustrated me and I never understood how that data can be valid. Can you? I wish that I could give my students ample opportunites to utilize the interenet and expose them to a variety of computer text structures, but it just isn't possible with only one working computer in the classroom. Even if I did have access to multiple computers for my students, my madated district curriculum doesn't even allow time for students to use the bathrooms nevermind implement technology! Does anyone else feel this way or is just the district I am in? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can achieve this in my classroom? HELP! :(
